About Winslow Homer
Winslow Homer began as an illustrator covering the Civil War for Harper's Weekly and became one of the greatest American painters of the 1800s. He painted rural life, children and boating scenes, and later the sea itself, from his studio on the coast of Maine.
Breezing Up and The Gulf Stream show both sides of him: the cheerful sailing scene of the 1870s and the dramatic struggle with the sea of his later years.
