Every painting page lists its sources at the bottom. We use:
- Wikidata, the free knowledge base, for each painting's date, materials, size and collection, linked on every page.
- Museum records: the open-access collection data of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the Cleveland Museum of Art, plus collection pages of the National Gallery (London), the Van Gogh Museum, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Tate and the National Museum of Norway where Wikidata was incomplete.
- Wikipedia articles for background, which we read and then write about in our own words.
- Search demand from Semrush (US, October 2026) to choose which paintings to cover.
Sizes are the painted surface without the frame, in centimeters, converted to inches. Where a museum's own record differs from Wikidata, we use the museum.
Where to see it. Museums move paintings, close rooms and lend works to exhibitions. Gallery numbers come from the museum's own data when published. Always check the museum's website before you travel to see one painting.
Images. We only show images of paintings that are in the public domain, taken from museum open-access programs (public domain or CC0) or Wikimedia Commons, credited under each image. We do not show works still in copyright (for example by Picasso, Dalí, Magritte, Hopper, Wood and Wyeth). We also do not show works in Italian state and Vatican collections, because Italian law restricts commercial reproduction of images of them.
