About Sandro Botticelli
Sandro Botticelli was a leading painter of Renaissance Florence, known for graceful figures and flowing lines. He worked for the powerful Medici circle and also painted frescoes on the walls of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
His two mythological masterpieces, Primavera and The Birth of Venus, hang side by side in the Uffizi Galleries in Florence.
His reputation faded for centuries after his death and was revived in the nineteenth century, when critics and artists in Britain, including the Pre-Raphaelites, championed his work. Today the Birth of Venus is one of the most recognized images of the Renaissance.
