What you are looking at

A nude woman lies on a couch with her back to us, turning her head to look over her shoulder, surrounded by silk drapery, a fan and a turban.

Why it is famous

Ingres painted it in 1814. Critics at the time complained that her back was impossibly long, with extra vertebrae, but the elongation is deliberate: Ingres cared more about the flowing line than anatomy.

How big is Grande Odalisque?

Grande Odalisque measures 91 × 162 cm (35.8 × 63.8 in), without its frame. Its surface is about 3 times the area of the Mona Lisa.
