Friends linger after lunch on a balcony with a striped awning beside the Seine: they drink, talk and flirt around a table covered with glasses and fruit. A young woman on the left plays with a small dog.
Why it is famous
Renoir painted it in 1880 and 1881 on the balcony of the Maison Fournaise restaurant at Chatou, near Paris, using his friends as models. The woman with the dog is Aline Charigot, who later married him, and the man sitting backward on a chair on the right is the painter Gustave Caillebotte.
