What you are looking at

Van Gogh, in a green coat and fur cap, looks at us with a bandage over his ear, beside an easel and a Japanese print on the wall.

Why it is famous

He painted it in January 1889, a few weeks after he cut off his own left ear in December 1888. He painted from a mirror, which is why the bandage appears on the right side of his face.
